I know talking about gen 1 here is usually baiting but I promise I'm posting in good faith.

I've never played through Man to before (my first pokemon was Diamond) but I've played all the modern pokemon games. Well I've got a copy of Fire Red and a DSlite and I'm going to play it for the first time.

What are some things I should know? Must-catch pokemon, or humps to prepare for? Warnings? General tips?

To have a good time, you are required to not browse /vp/. Don't listen to anything anyone says on the subject.

Just make sure you go into the apartments in the city with the slot machines and the department store. You need something in there to progress in the game.

There's an NPC trade for a Mr.Mime, use it.

Also the first E4 fight is a massive wall, takes a bit of grinding to get past and then its smooth sailing.

First of all, the gen 1 bashing on /vp/ is just an overreaction by autists who get triggered when people on facebook say "like if u think there are only 151 Pokemon xd". They're butthurt that people bullied them for not "growing out of" Pokemon when they were teenagers, or they're just upset by the fact that they never experienced Pokemon at the height of its popularity. Obviously there are a number of things that have been improved upon in later games, which is to be expected of a game that was released 20 years ago. But the originals are still solid games that got the praise they get for a reason. It was a good foundation that the rest of the series was built on.

As for things you should know beforehand, just start playing the game and enjoy it. Like every Pokemon game, it's designed to be completed by children so you should be able to comfortably beat the game going into it blind. Although I guess you should note that you can't obtain Johto evolutions before the post-game in FRLG. For example, if you try to evolve Golbat before you beat the Elite 4 and get the National Dex, it will suddenly stop and you can't get a Crobat.

FireRed is one of the best pokemon games
some tips- you can challenge gyms 3-6 in whatever order you want, its much more open than past games.
You need 10 caught pokemon to get Cut
40 caught pokemon for the Exp Share

Head to the safari zone asap, you get Strength and Surf from there
You can buy dratini from the slot machine rewards place, along with the best tms in the game.
Dratini/Dragonair can also be found with the super rod in the safari zone.
Eevee is in celadon, Lapras is in saffron

Lel, Slowpoke is infamous for being the hardest thing to get in gen 3 if you don't own Leafgreen. Slowpoke family aside you can get the national Pokedex completed in gen 3 with Emerald, GoD, and a Kanto game so anyone who picked Firered was fucked.

You're railroaded into a Rock then Water gym. From that point onward you can take the gyms in almost any order you like. Some may require plot advancement to unlock but your 4th gym challenge can be Blaine.

I (and many others) classify FireRed as gen 3, and it actually is very good. It has roughly the same layout as Kanto in gen 1 and it fixes some of the problems with gen 1 (to be fair though, gen 2 fixed this a lot too).

The best experience you can possibly have though is having someone else play along side you using LeafGreen so you can complete the Pokedex (hard to do since you have a DS Lite though). Try to catch as many Pokemon as you can, you're going to find some actual challenge in finding things like Safari Zone Pokemon, as well as evolving everything that you need to.

This is something very important about the Kanto region. There's a lot that you have to go out of the way to find. Seaform Islands are entirely optional, the only legendary you'll most likely run into easily is Moltres on Mt. Ember. Which brings up another point...

Additionally, after you beat the Elite Four, you're not done. You have to go to the Sevii Islands (at this point, you've already been to the first three) and after you've done everything there, you have the Elite Four rematches (and these aren't wimpy like the Sun and Moon rematches).

And after all of that, if you're still not satisfied with how much you've done, get yourself a copy of Colosseum, a GameCube if you don't have one, a link cable, and a Gameboy Advance SP and take on the Colosseums. This is why I always say that gen III has huge replayability, just like gen IV.

FR/LG fossil pokemon are only lv5 so unless you want to grind they aren't worth planning around.

Also the phy/spe split needs to be taken into account. Kabutops can't really take advantage of it's water type since all water attacks are special.

There were two splits, you're thinking of the Special split, which started in gen 2. The physical/special MOVE split was gen IV. Certain types always do certain damage based off either attack or special attack as seen here >>35364086.

Yes, that's why the elemental punches don't do shit from Hitmonchan until gen 4.

For the game you're playing, if your Pokemon uses a Water-type attack (any Water-type attack) it'll work off the Special Attack stat. In Gen 4 and on, the move itself determines if it goes off the Attack or Special Attack stat (and Defense or Special Defense stat)

Basically what this means is that certain Pokemon suck because they have low stats, for example, Gyarados isn't the best to have Water-type moves on due to its low Special Attack, despite the fact that it's Water-type.

For example Gengar is a ghost type, and Shadow Ball is a ghost type move. However because Gengar has a shit physical attack stat it would be better to use a different type move like thunderbolt or psychic, because Ghost Type moves go off of your Physical stat.

Gengar is viable due to it's speed and being able to learn a lot of different TM's. However the only good counter for psychic types at the time were Dark pokemon, but you can't really get any dark types until post game.
