Owls are my favorite, and we’ve got two lines now.
Hoothoot is adorable and Noctowl is pretty neat but ultimately just an anime Eagle-Owl. Not much in the way of frills or fun abilities, and very underwhelming in battle. Hoothoot’s clock motif was odd but it was something and it just gets thrown out when it evolves.
Rowlet is wonderful, Dartrix is not bad for a middle stage, and I love Decidueye conceptually. A shadowy, stealthy, forest-dwelling predator is represented really well by Grass/Ghost, I thought that was a really creative choice. The Robin Hood archery theme is cool, too, but I have a few gripes. I’m not a huge fan of the increasingly humananoid starter designs, and I think they still could’ve had a leafy camo hood and even feather arrows without making the odd wings with simply shaped feathers or overly human-like movements and behaviors. It still works for me overall, because inaccurate physics and minor strange design choices don’t bother me much in my fantasy cockfighting game. Starterwars, though, almost ruin the line for me.
Snowy Owls are my favorite of the owls and I’d love to see that represented, but Ice typing is not a great place to start. I’d almost like to see them to in an opposite direction: make it a Fire/Something type with “white hot flames” that lives in cold regions and hunts Ice type Pokémon. Or at least give it a good gimmick to be worth the weakness of Ice/Flying, like an accuracy boosting ability with Hurricane and Blizzard.
