There are so many different hidden themes connecting them together and weaved into each individual's designs that none of these elements managed to stand out from each other and give them any universal appeal. I find it impressive just how much Unno achieved with the designs conceptually, but the execution's lacking is evident in their reception. The other two reasons are the way they were distributed, just being giftmons that you use to beat the 1st gym and Cut the Tree to Dreamyard before boxing for something later (they would have made more of an impact had they only been a gift after the first gym, where you'd be left with the impression of overcoming them and wanting one of your own). Lastly, they were just everywhere in BW's trainer teams. You see one, the other two are nearby and you'll see any one a lot. Gets annoying if you play too much in one sitting.
