Same applies to adapting canon characters. A story starring May, Dawn, etc.? She's an asshole who treats everyone like shit and has their every line of dialogue dripping with sarcasm because of HUR REALISM™. I'd honestly accept the most generic "guy gets a starter, travels, meets a handful of interesting people, collects 8 badges, maybe competes in a contest or two, competes in the league, does well but loses to a more experienced trainer, and so on" story right now.
