I thought Probopass had nothing related to Yokais.

Remind me of Ghouls n' Ghosts on the Genesis. The first stage had a bladed weasel that shot little tornados.

For the first time, it actually makes sense.

Stakataka has some few inspirations to the nurikabe, a wall yokai. Also Hitmonlee looks like a donotsura and Mawile looks like a futakuchi-onna

Especially in the first gen Pokemon has always had a lot of inspiration that is by yokai myths and stories

I've probably missed a good amount, but these are just a few of the easier ones for me to recognize. Stakataka as a Nurikabe is a really obvious one that I missed before this thread, but it might also be a Mokumokuren.

I've always wanted a mon based on a wall or a nurikabe because it's an interesting concept, so when Stakataka was revealed it quickly became one of my favorites of Gen 7

Long ago, before Stakataka, I asked on /vp/ why there's no Nurikabe pokemon yet. Someone pointed at Snorlax, since he always blocks paths.
I found it rather farfetched, but do you think there may be something to it?

Snorlax has some traits that are similar to nurikabe but they're fairly subtle. Earlier depictions of the yokai itself have it look like less of a plain wall and more of a animalistic wall hybrid, and Snorlax kinda has that look going on (plus its HP and defenses are high). And of course both tend to block the way. The way to make a nurikabe disappear is completely different to how you get rid of Snorlax tho, plus Snorlax's nurikabe traits are a little more obvious in the earlier games. Those traits kinda disappeared after Gen 2
I never thought of it that way, but now that you mentioned it I can see why that anon would think of Snorlax that way

Eh, close enough, although it is most likely a coincidence. However, since snorlax is indeed the franchise's infamous roadblock and doesn't seem to 1:1 represent any real animal (some say bears but it's a stretch), it might really have a nurikabe inspiration

Well yeah the classic roadblocks are a given but I meant the first POKEMON (not object) people think of when asked about a roadblock in the series. Snorlax is probably the most famous one, followed by sudowoodo, followed by kecleon.

But yeah judging by all normie comics I've seen, the tiny tree that you use cut on is the all time iconic roadblock of the franchise.
