Just got kind of a general question for most of /vp/
Do you box your starters? Have you ever felt weirdly bad about it? And if so, why?

I only boxed Serperior and Chesnaught.
With gen 5 I played it twice and on my first go I had Emboar and didn't box but I didn't finish either. Played it again last year with a contrary snivy to see what it was like and Lilligant was just infinitely better and I wasn't into the design either.
In XY, I liked chespin the most but was so disappointed by Chesnaught. I remember when they got leaked before release and I was so sure the final evos were fake because of how much quiladin changed.

Never. In my experience starters tends to be the only useable thing I have until the 5th gym or something in most games.

Unless it's like Chikorita or Snivy.

Only once: I boxed my starter in Crystal because I already used all 3 Johto starters in Silver thanks to the clone glitch. In every other game, I've kept my starter the whole way through, because it just feels wrong for me to ditch the very first Pokemon I get in a game.

In HGSS I boxed cyndaquil after hatching togepi. Since I managed to get my hands on togepi early I treated it as my "starter" throughout the rest of the game.

Only time I've done it is in Crystal, having already played Silver with my favourite gen 2 starter. My "ace" was an Alakazam instead and it was fucking dope desu. Psychic and the three elemental punches was unstoppable ingame. I really wish the games offered a way to have any Pokemon be your starter, even if it's restricted to a NG+ or something.

Sometimes if I want to try something different or do a specialized run like mono-type.
Otherwise the only times I legit box a starter are Unova, Johto and Alola.

Heavily considered it in gen7, mostly because there was a lot of overlap with all the starters and pokemon I wanted to use. I didn't box Totodile in gen2 but I did consider Mareep to be my starter. And I absolutely boxed Chespin, that gen was boring.

I dis it 'cause i never use them since gen 1, but it felt like a bad thing to do.

Now i trade them against a shit pkmn and i release it. I don't know why, but i feel better.
