What's up /vp/ I wanted to make a thread that isn't about fake news or leaks, Groundon vs Kyorge, 2018vs2019. But a thread to appreciate the pre-SM anime seasons.

>What season of Pokemon are you guys rewatching?
(I'm currently rewatching DP) I liked the opposing ideas between Paul and Ash. This season really tested Ash as a trainer and his philosophy for training Pokemon. Unfortunately, Brock had overstayed his welcome and is unnecessary for this season.

DP came out in 2006(Japan) and 2007(US). That's over 10 years ago anon. That's old school. Plus, they were still drawing the backgrounds of many of the scenes before completely switching over to CGI backgrounds in BW.

The anime was more or less good (by Pokemon anime standards) from Kanto through DP with the exception of Johto getting bogged down with too much repetitive filler, and AG's Magma/Aqua arc. Of course you had your share of crap episodes in every arc, but with every saga being 100+ eps that's understandable.

I'm not fond of the semi-reboots they keep doing now with BW, XY and SM. The anime feels completely disconnected now whereas each saga used to flow into the next.

I agree with that. Post DP felt like a completely different saga with no connection to the previous. I know its a reboot but there's no connection besides the random flashback of "oh yeah here's Ash's old Pokemon from seasons before you were born"

In AG now in my full series marathon because I never watched BW or XY, but want to see everything before them first as a refresher. Ash just got his 8th badge and May her 5th ribbon. Grand Festival and League soon, and the voice actor change is coming in the next 30 episodes.

Yeah, Ash and Max are just unbearable. I never liked Max from the beginning but could tolerate him but after that voice change. . . hell no. TR on the other hand have always gone through voice actor changes and they're pretty good transitions except for James' after AG.

Yeah, Ash's voice was really bad at the start, his VA was only 18 when she was cast in 2006 and it showed. Over the years she got better, but it was really rough for that season.

Either way having watched all of Hoenn before I was invested enough in seeing how AG's characters and plotlines ended so I saw all of BF to finish it up. Most of the Frontier Brain battles and May's rivalries with Drew/Harley are handled and wrapped up pretty well.

Oh, fuck off with this meme. I'm watching the dub all the way through all 1,000+ episodes and that's that. The few subs I've had to watch (the banned episodes, ANA specials, etc.) were painful and really grating to watch. I've also met Sarah Natochenny and spoken at length with her. She's a really nice lady, so please stop bullying Sarah.

lol. Dude, it's not just the voices, all the music is changed and the dub music especially as the PUSA dub continues gets worse and worse. The Japanese music makes the anime.

Watch as much DP and XY subbed as you can.

If you watch any dub and sub ep of the same ep side by side, there is a load of difference, especially in the big battle eps. A lot of the big DP episodes for Ash's battles, Paul, Dawn's Contests, etc...the tone of the ep felt totally different because of the music change in the dub. Scenes that felt exciting or epic in the original became monotone or dull in the dubbed version.

Not all of DP is dubbed, but definitely watch as much of it is subbed as you can when you get to it.

The dub switch killed Battle Frontier for me which was my dream season. I'm still not over. The entire new dub is just so inferior. The voices, the music placement, the editing, it's just all so terrible. At least the subs are great.

They should have just cast someone with more experience back in 2006 than an 18 year old who had very little acting experience at the time.

They had contract agreements with 4kids (remember 4kids dubbed dozens of other anime at the time), so they couldn't work for TCPI. But those contracts expired somewhere around the early 2010's-2012 or so when 4kids went defunct, but I guess now Sarah has just voiced Ash so long (longer than Veronica even, she's now voiced Ash for 12 years since 2006) that they probably feel there's no reason to go back. Plus most kids of these days are used to Ash's current voice.

And besides that, none of the old characters besides Team Rocket are around anymore, besides Prof. Oak's brief appearances and the occasional old character cameo, so they just don't see the incentive. They didn't even bother having Rachael Lillis voice Misty again in her 2 ep SM cameo, which they could have theoretically done.

The TCPI said they'll never go back to the old characters due to wanting to maintain "consistancy". It's not worth it to them. Its also to much money to have Taylor redub the all the eps she missed to keep one voice for Ash

Pokemon could run another 10 years, I wonder if Sarah is ok with voicing Ash until she's 30-40 years old

Sarah has said she wants to get into editing more then acting (she talks about it in the vid of her to promote pokemon go). She probably stays due to the easy and consistent pay check

The animation in Johto is very washed out, the Johto eps had worse animation than Kanto, oddly enough. Probably because they were just churnin out one new ep after another.

Time moves quickly as an adult. People don't realize Hoenn is now 15 years old, and DP over 12 years old. Hell even BW is now 8 years old.

There are some people out there dumb enough to think nostalgia only correlates to the Kanto/Johto seasons for some reason, when the other sagas are now decade old themselves.

I always find it amusing on random places online you still see people talking about Misty leaving and being a major part of the show. Then you stop to realize how short-lived Misty's character was in terms of the overall anime, she was only around 5 years out of a now 21+ year series. Even if she's still in more eps than the other girls, she's still now only in 25% of the animes total episodes. Literally 800+ episodes now exist since Misty left.

It's actually kind of funny how the passage of time made Misty go from seemingly an important character in most or half the show...to becoming a short-lived minor sidekick companion who was only in the first 5 years and that's it beyond a few cameos. She's been gone 75% of the series.

Meowth's voice for the first 40ish episodes of Kanto was different. Maddie Blaustein replaced the original Meowth actor.

And yeah, Ted Lewis voiced James for roughly the first 13 Kanto eps before going to Eric Stuart.

TR in general should have never lasted this long anyway, although they're pretty fun in the SM season. Team Rocket much like Brock wore out their welcome by the time DP was airing, but given TR are treated like mascots they can never leave unlike Brock.

Are you high? And XY is literally the most generic shounen anime you can find, but with everything that could possibly be perceived good removed.
Completely strays away from the main aspect of pokemon, which is childish fun adventures and turns it into some boring drama camping show. Even BW, which was a snoozefest of a show was fun and enjoyable to a certain extent.

hm, i disagree
they are probably my favorite part of SM
but i did not like them at all in BW (their jpn VAs didnt like voicing them serious either) and i didnt like them in XY. DP was alright but they really dumbed them down. SM feels fresh
