The whole point of the game is to battle with your friends, but there's only 10-20 viable mons, and every battle is guaranteed to have a mega, a Z-crystal, and a trio legendary, and who knows what new overpowered gimmick they'll include in gen 8. Every battle is identical, and that gets boring fast.
Z-crystals were a good idea in theory, but in practice strong new mons are still more viable than mid-tier old mons, and are always better suited to hold a Z-crystal over something else.
More regional variants, more single-mon Z crystals (with effects beyond "lots of damage"), and expanded movesets for old mons to give everything a viable niche. That will encourage people to experiment with team-building.
