It's a genuinely good design. There's definitely cooler pokemon out there, but this design is perfect to represent what this pokemon is supposed to be.

I used to think it was too simplist when I was a child (I always compared it to Mewtwo and used to find the latter to be cooler). Nowadays I think it's a pretty good design.

It's cute at best, boring at worst. It isn't "bad", just extremely simple and bland, maybe generic even. Since it is the ancestor of all shit, being so simple of a design doesn't hurt its concept and being the mysteryous 151 mon of the first gen inevitably has allowed it to age well.

The same design introduced in gen 7? I could bet you everybody would be meh about it except the few people that truly like it, or the few people that want to fuck it.

I mean I like it but I do think it's rarity played a part in it's popularity. Then again there's still plenty of Genwunners that continue to parrot the "original 150" meme so maybe it was too obscure for them.
