If you mentioned the trainer in Brawl you'd have a point, but that's also when they added Lucario (a Gen 4 mon). Come SSB4 they stripped down the trainer to the essential Charizard, who was being marketed heavily given Generations and its new Mega Evolution. And they added Greninja, a Gen 6 mon.
If something is added into the new Smash, it's going to be something representative of the new gen's marketing strategy.
