I dislike that none of Excadrill's 3D model animations reflect arguably the main feature of its design - the fact it can turn into a drill.

Any other Pokemon where their 3D model animations have squandered potential?

Not really, if anything it's the opposite. Most of the animations do a great job with this. Pokemon like Hitmontop and Donphan are massively improved because you get to see how they're actually supposed to move. Excadrill is an exception.

While Mienshao does have an animation using it's sleeves, i think they are rather underwhelming
Also Z-moves as a whole have weak animations, most notable the normal type Z move, where they could've used the running animations but they decided against it for some reason

A lot of the 3D models need to be redone. GF did good job of future proofing their Pokemon but the models are at the bare minimum. Looking at them, they rely too heavy on those lines they like to use to add dept. We know they used Maya AutoDesk to create the models. They can get an outside group that can add more details to the models and create better battle animations and idle poses. The Pokemon still feel very stiff and static.

They use Maya. Remember the first trailer for SuMO and they showed Pikipek in wireframe mode. That was Maya Autodesk.

Pretty sure the problem is not the models themselves, though. It's mostly the (lack) of varied and dynamic animations that makes most mons kind of boring.
Also the colors for many of them.

By the way, does Samurott use the swords in 3D? I was shocked when i discovered they were a thing, after a full playthrough using it and having no clue.

Yeah it’s the physical attack animation. Though only Razor Shell is coded to use that animation unless they did some changes in USUM(got Sacred Sword as an egg move but I didn’t bother breeding one yet to test).

All of Blastoise's animations, mega or not. In X/Y, most of his strongest and best moves used his mouth for its animation like ice beam and more sinfully hydro pump, cannon and scald. The only reason I even used water pulse on Blastoise in gen 6 is because from the back in its mega form, it actually looked like the pulse was coming out of mega Blastoise's cannon, even justifying the ability it got since it actually used its cannon.

Now in gen 7 they got rid of even that with water pulse now also coming out of Blastoise's mouth in mega form also.

I Will never understand how they decided delphox model/pose was okay. Its the worst of them all imo. Its even weirder considering starters are along with box legendaries the protagonists of a generation and Delphox came from the generation where 3d models made their debut

Yeah, really not a fan of how they tried to make Pokemon sound like real animals. Kinda defeats the point, strips them of their identity as well as half of the fun of them being fictional creatures.

Feels like a backwards move especially when they made Pikachu sound like it does in the anime, not the other way around.

I like them sounding like real animals though. That Pikachu has that weird skinny body with a huge cutesy oversized head and the voice is just really bad. Generations did a good job with most pokemon sounds but not that Pikachu.

I disagree with that. GF already did the hard work of creating the 800 + models. GF can pay good $$ to people to who specializes in rigging 3D characters. All an outside group would need to do is go back into the models and recreate the IK Skeleton and make more fluid animations for each models.

Most bird-esque Flying types. Not only are some of them flying when design wise they have no business doing so (Xatu was already mentioned, like goddamn the totem pole stance is the one big iconic thing about the monster), but having so many of them just gliding is extreme laziness too. Compare to the elaborate wing flapping idle animations in Stadium/Colo/BattleRev.

Probopass looks so rad in SM anime and they used that gimmick very well too (I don't find a webm of that, sorry). I always thought Probopass is one of the most underrated Pokémon for how cool it can really be.

We need more animations on games to see how some Pokémon really looks. Losing the main point of the design in games as it happens in Pokémon like Excadrill and Probopass is a disgrace.

They could not focus on it, anon. It could focus on its shell and become defense orientated. They choose to give it a big cannon instead.

It's kinda ridiculous to think it's ok to have a mon with one extra big gun as long as it doesn't shoot water.

It's more likely they made it come out of its mouth because it was easier to code.

Honestly while it's not exactly squandered potential, Feraligatr never really transitioned to 3D very well, but in 2D it always looks stellar.

I dunno maybe give it a more dynamic pose or something. Have it on all fours or hunched over like it's ready to lunge at the opponent, maybe at a slightly rotated angle so it's not perfectly symmetrical and bland looking.
