The rumors of Smash is August or September, so it stills falls in line with 5 or 6 months. If the rumors are true, it could possibly be them leaving space for another huge title in the fall.

Except it won't be at E3 if it turns out to be for 2019. They said anything that is meant to be released for next year will be announced "at a later date". If it's revealed during that time, 2018 will still be planned.

I think to them they can announce future game titles as long if it's just the titles, but everything will be current year as far as game footage goes. That happened with FE too, just a confirmation for a future installment, but nothing more.

I should've been more clear. When they announced ORAS in E3 it was information we already knew about, but last E3 was their very first statement about the Switch games happening. It feels like they're transitioning towards doing game reveals during E3 and future information through the usual social media, corocoro, etc.
