Mammoths have been preserved in ice, and existed up until only a couple thousand years ago. The egyptian pyramids were being built when Mammoths were still alive. Things like Smilodon and Megatherium are 2 MILLION years old, they lived when our ancestors were first mastering walking upright. Bit of an order of magnitude between those two groups.

Though, I really do wish they'd be more open to making prehistoric Pokemon be non-fossilmons. That way we wouldn't have to rely on just 2 families every gen/every other gen, and they wouldn't have to be "stuck" with Rock all the time

I wonder what kind of ancient animals could be used to cover Rock/Ghost and Rock/Normal?
Maybe for the latter it could be a recently man made fossil-mon like a breed of dog, or just a wild animal that was so common it's crazy that we made it extinct. For the former maybe a pokemon that died out and brought itself back into the environment through sheer force of will.

gf hasn't exploited the fossil options yet fortunatelly, but I'd like to see fossils being a more important part of the plot. imagine for example finding a weird almost legendary fossil, going to the Lab, which is a gym too (but to be able to challenge the leader you need to bring him a fossil); and after beating him and reviving the mon it goes full berserk like Kyogre/Groudon and you need to stop him with a special item/pokeball; the postgame has two more normal fossils. There it is, a lab for reviving fossils being a part of the plot and not just there

He's the idiot who proposed that tyrannosaurs were scavengers despite them not having the mobility to live exclusively off scavenging and likely needed large meals at a time. I've got it, Rock/Normal dodo that evolves into a terror bird, and can only evolve by learning Ancient Power through breeding.
This explains how they finally died out as the last groups of them couldn't evolve anymore once the move was lost, and they all died out once humans and the pokemon they brought wiped them out, as they couldn't compete without evolving.
First stage should get Oblivious and Klutz, while the evolved form gets Keen Eye, Adaptability, and they both have Speed Boost as their HA.

If i'm not wrong the rock is because the resurrection procedure is not perfect.
But i don't remember where does it come from this info.
I think that Pokemon needs a region focused on fossils\ pokemon past ages.
Maybe a region where many pokemon are remnants from bygone ages or are actually descendant (like a modern omanyte).
Maybe creates some archeo-formes that are literally the pokemon ancestors (sort of including "scientific evolution").
Hell maybe the foucs of professor research is about that and maybe founding the "link" between pokemon and humans?!?

Since cartilage doesnt survive the fossilization process and only a shark's teeth really last at all, I would love a Megaldon fossil mon where its a Ghost/Rock. The majority of the body is all spiritual or ghost like , while the teeth are the only part of it thats Corporeal. It would be something maybe a touch more interesting then Rock/Water, as you could just have it floating anywhere.
