It's evolution method adds an interesting element, plus it literally get two entirely new limbs so you can't say it just gets bigger. And I think the fused tendrils on the body are also intrinsically different from Tangela.

Yeah gen 4 was the nail in the coffin, but they were already in their way to irrelevancy before then. When almost all moves were Normal and a STAB move was a rarity, but Normal types could deal out reliable damage with a varied move pool? That ended with gen 2.
To be clear, I like the current movepool design philosophy more, but it's just sad to see that it had to come at the cost of all Normal types being relevant.
