We are much bigger sticklers for brand recognition. If you're going to change a logo, it had better be more presentable than the original one was. Even then, it very rarely happens because the original is too recognizable and no one is going to accept another. That is mostly what is going on with the western logo, it is too iconic to change, even if it's design is too old fashioned by now. If they wanted to modernize it, they should've done it long ago like the Japanese did. I wouldn't even know how to start on making it look more appealing, though, or at least have the same dynamism as the JP logo.
