I'm a complete beginner to pokémon, please forgive my dumb question.

Me and a friend bought theme decks today, I bought a recent (sun and moon) one and he bought a evolutions one containing older pokémon. We started to play, and we quickly realized, that my cards were generally stronger then his.

we wanted to buy boosters to see what we can get, but now we don't know if the card distribution is generally not equally fair.

Can anyone tell me what the best buy for us would be as beginners to just get an even level to play against each other?

Evos are basically low power cards from the boxed legacy game. Your deck isn't even a good one and yeah it should be winning against his.

The best theme decks right now are garchomp and empoleon, with the matchup generally going to garchomp. A new set drops tomorrow and it's a little light on power. Ultra Prism and Burning Shadows have most the core cards with Guardians Rising existing mostly as the Tapu Lele GX lottery.

The GX cards are what most of the competitive decks focus around these days, with a line of GX attackers + 1 or 2 support mon lines + 1x or 2x Tapu Lele GX for consistency.

Buying singles either at a shop or online is the best way to put together a non-premade deck you want, popping packs is super hit/miss and really not worth it for most people.

Getting into the game mostly consists of finding a decent pool of support cards like Prof. Sycamore, Cynthia, Guzma, Acerola, N etc, some trainer cards, and then the mons you like. After your trainer pool is decent switching decks becomes a matter of just finding the mons you want.

Mach Strike garchomp vs Lycanroc's new deck is probably the ones you want if you don't want to buy singles. Burning shadows and Ultra prism are both good packs to pop.

It’s hard to say cause I have a lot more experience with yugioh than Pokémon (card games in mind) and you may be better off visiting a card shop. The shops offer a...modest selection of current or classic cards. You may see something really expensive ($30+ for a single card) and those are typically the good cards in the meta rn. If you just wanna play with a friend you don’t need to worry about “the best” cards available. But yeah typically built decks sold like what you got are kinda ass. Specifically made where there will be a current series of boosters out that contains cards that will fit perfectly in those decks that you bought (convenient huh)

Typically card games have power creeps so the newer product will always trump the older one
