I agree with most things you said but characters and story were incredible which was possible with legitimate sequels that expanded the region tenfold.

also seasons were great, it reminded me of when most of hoenn was raining as kyogre ran loose. having the whole region change together is still a great idea and makes the world feel more lived in

gen 5 was fresh and risky and I think it really paid off but there are tons of negatives that came with it which you have stated

Unova is a microregion and macroregion alltogether brainlet. Check the locations and climate/habitats and compare them with the US. See where are the deserts, mountains, caves, cold regions, forests etc. Humilau / Florida / Keys was only put at north east because the first games already filled the area. Hopefully no more burger regions.

Yeah it took so many risks oh boy. The biggest risk it took was causing the downfall of pokemon and Gen5 marks that exact point in pokemon's history. A soft reboot that tried to be more than it could attempt and ended up destroying the franchise by introducing the shitty formula of simplifying everything. The region is literally just a giant pokebal circle, as an example of that. Apparently because Sinnoh was too treacherous and confusing for japanese kids.

I agree there's a lot wrong with Unova including the lack of creatvity with environments and the incredibly dull map design.

at the time of release way more people had a DS and not a 3DS and I'm glad they did that since I didn't have one either at the time

it definitely was trying to be more than it could handle but the reason being gen 4 was fucking atrocious and had to be made up for. gen 3 did a great job soft rebooting so I see why they tried it again in 5 since retreading in 4 didn't work out. Sinnoh wasn't to confusing it was just slow and complete ass to play through.

I get that DPPt's engine was slow, but not as much as you're implying it to be. Platinum fixes Diamond and Pearl's speed issue by a mile, and you can turn off battle animations and change text speed to fast if you want it to be even faster. And please elaborate on why Gen4 was atrocious, the speed issue is far from enough to warrant it to be called atrocious.

it wasn't just slow it was fucking grueling. besides the slow speed the game works at theres snow and fog and more HM nonsense and retreading I just wanted to beat the game to say I did it. I love seeing each gen have its own distinctive battle animations but trust me the first thing I do in any pokemon game is put text speed to its fastest. I went back to gen 3 until HGSS came out.

and that's why I don't think Plat is a good fix to Sinnoh cause besides being essentially the same bad game, HGSS already came out. Which is 100% a much better game as a whole. Gen 4 although having many positives is overshadowed by shit. they clearly weren't ready for a DS pokemon game and it shows

also evos to previous mons are absolutely horrendous. worst fucking things in the franchise

Fog and HMs are the only thing I agree with you in being unnecessary. The snow is supposed to be thick and difficult to traverse through. That part of Sinnoh faces harsh climates, so do you expect to be able to glide through it like the ice cave puzzles in the previous gens? And even that isn't enough reason to call Sinnoh atrocious.

Yeah. I don't get why they had to improve otherwise blande pokemons such as Togetic, Roselia, Yanma, Sneasel, Piloswine, Tangela, Snoring etc by introducing better evolutions to them, therefore making those pokemon at least worthwhile and useful.

Honestly I was really happy to see snow in a pokemon game as I hadn't seen any irl (born and raised in Miami) but the speed of the game was a huge issue so with terrains, HMs, and backtracking tacked on it was just a bad experience.

although I shit all over them there are some evos from previous lines that 4th Gen introduced that are so good I consistently forget they came from these games. ie Yanmega, Weavile, Mamoswine, they are just not good enough to cover lickylicky and fucking tangrowth. along with totally pointless ones like Roserade

How is Roserade pointless? It vastly improves the potential Roselia had. And what's wrong with Tangrowth? Tangela is a pretty weird design to begin with, and I can't imagine how an evolution for it could be handled differently without looking unfitting. Cheren is the best rival character that also is your friend. He's never too buddy buddy with you but clearly isn't a bad guy. His standoffish nature presents him as not edgy but just kind of an introvert. I think his character shines especially after breaking his shell and taking over as the normal type gym leader. He also works as a great contrast to Bianca, they have legitimate chemistry between them unlike any of the pals from XY

I meant specifically design-wise. I really don't feel like roserade added anything to the evolutionary line. It still looks like a plant with roses for hands and arguably looks worse. The thorns and roses roselia has just look better and are more original overall.
the same can be said for tangrowth but MUCH worse. there was so much wasted potential here and instead its just... a bigger tangela. absolutely zero effort went into designing a kanto mon evo and that really shows that it was a check mark they just had to do and no one cared for

There's not one interesting thing I can think about Cheren. Bianca was fun, almost like a female version of Barry in attitude and appearance. She had a considerably happy and bubbly personality and at least has some role in the story with the entire Dream Yard thing and her sub plot with her dad.
Cheren just doesn't seem the slightest bit special or memorable to me as he's no different than Silver or Blue, except all characters motivations removed. Not technically to say bad, but not good either. He just doesn't stand out at all. Just a boring battle machine of a character that isn't even challenging to begin with. I appreciate that they at least tried to do something with him in BW2 by making him a gym leader but that's about it.

That's undeniable. Unova from the outside tried to act all grim and dark but it gets even more linear at the core. It marks the transition between Gen1-4 towards a more straigtforward approach to pokemon so even on it's own, the generation is very weird.

Tangela was already pretty much perfect. Making it "just a bigger Tangela" is the best thing to do! I'd MUCH rather have an evolution that sticks with what makes the previous stage good than an evolution that completely changes everything good about the previous stage.

Sometimes (NOT ALL THE TIME, BUT SOMETIMES), "it just gets bigger" is all you really need

The only reason to give it an evo at this point was to do something different and they dropped the ball hard. they needed X amount of new evos for old mons so they met their quota. but if not we could've gotten some cool mega in gen 6 but instead we have... a bigger tangela.

I'm not a designer or illustrator but anybody with half a brain can tell you tangrowth's design is lazy and extremely uninspired.

They were shitty environments with an absolutely awful gimmick. "Grass but it slows you down and gets you stuck" is actively bad design, it doesn't even add to the challenge of the game.

Unova wasn't anything major since every single goddamn Pokemon has "the obligatory lush forest for grass types", "the beachy section", "the desert for ground types", "the place for fire types", "the bat cave", "the ghost tower area" but at least it played around with those concepts in having stuff like Chargestone Cave, the ghost area being a dragon area too, and that wetlands area for fighting type Pokemon. Dual typing environments is a great way to breathe life into area tropes rather than playing them straight all the time.

Wut? I despise Unova, but even I'm aware of the fact that Celestic Tower doesn't have any dragon type pokemon. That's Daragonspiral Tower you're talking about, and even that isn't a ghost tower.

I think the reason why I liked Silver and Blue is because their lack of characterization left more to the imagination. The games were a little darker back then and had less happy music. Now everyone is a smiling goon and the game is a giant, cloyingly sweet, sappy feel good fest. I understand this is a children's game, but I wish GF would make it a little darker.

The first ones were targeting children from 6 to 12 or maybe 16 for early core-gamers.
Nowadays they are targeting the same audience exepted they also have the older people from the first and later games that can be in their late 30's.
For the games to become more childish, lighter and handholding isn't a logical evolution. They are transforming what made their succes, while frustrating their early fans.

Silver and Blue are in no way good. They're just a glorified version of a jerky and bratty kid.
But the big reason I prefer them over Cheren is because at least they have characterization that's made apparent in the game, instead of giving it in the vaguest and blandest way possible.
With Blue and Sliver, even though they were rude to the player for most of the game, they at least have a change of opinion towards the player at the end. With Cheren, there's no difference in him compared to the beginning. He's still the same old boring rival he was in the start.

He's still prideful and self-centred. He respects you more at the end of the game but that's about it when it comes to his change.
Cheren starts as a cool-headed boy who wants to improve himself by winning against you and gym leaders. Towards the end, he notices that his way of thinking is wrong and actually admits that the player is stronger. He swallows his pride and decides to help you on your quest with stopping N.

You can't say that Blue changes but Cheren doesn't. It's not even a matter of opinion here.
It seems to me like you just want characters who are assholes towards the player since they are easier to remember.

Actually, since generation 3, Pokemon games have been having darker plot but more cheerful/unrealistic characters. This contrast is most apparent in sixth generation where everyone is a smiling cartoonish character except the antagonist who wants to suck life out of Pokemon to create nuclear explosion. Great.
I also wish that the newest games were more like gen 1/2/5.
