Play the older games again, try nuzlocking them this time. Pick up a fangame or if you don't mind a bit different gameplay another monster capturing game like Fossil Fighters (avoid Frontier if you do pick up this series) or Puzzle and Dragons Z.

OP, if you haven't even tried the 3DS games then try them. Don't base your opinion on a bunch of screeching autists on fucking 4chan. The games aren't as good as previous ones (imo, you may feel differently), but they're still fun games. I'd recommend X/Y over S/M though if you're after something cozy. You can get them for like $20 so it's not a huge loss if you don't enjoy it.

the problem with so many of these fucking games is the cutscenes. XY is unbearable to revisit because of it

gen 4-5 games are a safe bet. Any DS pokemon game really.
