Is it time to move away from Grass/Fire/Water for starters? At least temporarily? It's getting pretty boring.

What should be the next triad?
Fighting/Flying/Rock?
Or maybe even three that don't even neatly fit into that perfect super-effective not-effective pattern? Maybe three that are neutral to each other...Normal/Poison/Bug?

That would be interesting - three of the same type. But they're very different pokemon so you have to make a judgement based on your first impression.

The purpose of the starter Pokemon is to introduce the rock paper scissors nature of Pokemon to new players. No other trio is as immediately obvious.

People seem to forget that you literally do not have to use your starter Pokemon, and recent games have been pretty good at providing you a wide variety of types from very early on in the game.

They'll never break from Grass/Water/Fire because it's one of the most basic Rock/Paper/Scissors Combinations there is, and requires very little effort to fully comprehend for a beginner.
You have to remember that GameFreak designs each game with the idea that it could be your first (and that you're also a very young child), and tries to keep things as basic and understandable as possible early on until progress is made and you're presumably more familiar with the mechanics.

Professors giving out free pokemon are nice, but why not make a more family-oriented process? Maybe make the player have a father for the first time since Gen 3 and its remakes?

A starter triangle is not the only way to teach children type advantages you autists. You could literally make the starters any type and still show kids the advantages/disadvantages to that particular type. Using the other two starters as guinea pigs for illustrating these concepts is not remotely necessary.

But if they actually did, I'd like Flying-Fighting-Ice as a new triad. It's original, it's different, it's fresh and it allows a realistic ingame Ice mon to be usable super early without getting outdone super easily.
