Does anyone else honestly prefer the older graphics to the remakes? I had a hunger to play Red/Blue again, so I went to the GBA games, and I was surprised at how much I disliked the presentation. I think the graphics are strangely dull, and the music in particular sounds pretty bad. It feels much more natural to play the games as they were originally released.

I think the GBA games easily had the best art, although you can probably include gen 2 as well.
Gen 1 has a lot of nostalgia going for it but the sprites (especially the pokemon) are SUPER janky looking. Gens 4-5 felt like they were losing the simplicity of earlier gens.
The sweet spot is right in the middle.

I prefer GSC to HGSS just because Gen 4's engine is fucking shit. RBGY and FrLg can go either way for me. If I want to do a really fast run, I'll pick Red since it's a lot shorter.

I actually think the jankiness is a benefit, in the old games the Pokemon look more like monsters, in the remakes they look more like toys or dolls.

There's too much 'wrong' with RB, that any remake is able to capitalize on the opportunity to blow it away and create a better overall game, even though the artistic and musical choices are 'eh.' Nostalgia will bring me back to RB, but it's difficult to overlook the sparse movepools, wonky gameplay mechanics and glitches, and say it still holds up.

GS is a different bag, because it essentially *is* a polished up version of RB. So that the earlier calculus is lopsided in favor of GSC over its respective remakes;

GS aesthetics >>> HGSS aesthetics
GS music >>> HGSS music
GS gameplay = HGSS gameplay

GS fixed the issues with glitches, actually improved on the presentation, has better movepools, etc. than RBY, so that a remake actually doesn't have as many low-hanging fruits to correct. HGSS over GS comes down to a personal preference – I think Gen II's gameplay mechanics are more fun than anything else that comes after, because Gen 3-on has disproportionately rewarded autism and grinding in a way I/II didn't really – but whether you prefer the best version of the series' original gameplay, or the most content-packed games the series has ever had, I do think Gen II's music/graphics/etc. are better than HGSS'.

tl;dr -
RB < FRLG
GS > HGSS

No, Gen II has several points (Whitney, Chuck, Clair, the Elite 4, Red) where the only option is autistic grinding and because of the trainer and encounter levels it is absolute murder to do so.

I think Gen II is the purest "autism reward" generation

If you had to grind in G/S you're doing it wrong, Nuzlocke or whatever self imposed challenges aside.

It has the weakest gyms, trainers, and E4, bar none.

Yes. The colors look very washed out and overly bright; all the characters have weird peg leg bodies; and there's more empty space to accommodate the GBA, making everything feel farther apart than necessary.

Also, in the original the Pokemon battle screen is very compact with each corner containing some kind of relevant information, adding to the feeling of a close encounter with a wild creature. In the new ones, again because of the GBA I assume, there's more empty space, making the enemy Pokemon feel smaller and way-the-fuck-over-there instead of an immediate threat.

There literally is not enough experience in the game to get to Clair, the Elite Four or Red with MULTIPLE POKEMON at an appropriate level without grinding.

With Red, the games do not really make it obvious what the reward for clearing the Kanto Gym Leaders is, so there's a lot of opportunity there to faff about. You wipe out Kanto, you keep screwing around in Johto to find all the days of the week siblings, fight people who call you, ride the SS Aqua a few times... by the time you've gotten to Red, you probably will still be underleveled, but it's not the end of the world if you actually lose to Red the first time. I don't think I did, but it's really just gonna depend on who you decide to use. I used an Espeon for most of GS, and Espeon, or any other special sweeper with a neutral-or-better STAB against the starter trio, will do fine.

What I don't understand about /vp/ is this complaint that the games are too easy that you guys feel compelled to try cringeworthy things like "Nuzlocke challenges xD" some Youtube nerd came up with, but once there's a game that doesn't hold your hand for the entire run, it's now a knock on the game as having a bad level curve, etc.

From what I've seen the "bad level curve" complaint is usually that it makes the game too EASY, because of fighting Lvl. 20-30 scrubs even late midgame.

HGSS gameplay wise beats G/S/C hands down.

HGSS has all the improvments from gen 4, has running shoes and an actual end game after red.

Sound is preference but if a gun was put to my head id say HGSS because it has the GB player, so the option is there. But i understand it doesnt sound 100% like the originals because of technical reasons so theres that.

Visually i feel the same, i get its down to prefrence but i like the detail of the newier sprites.

FR/LG are the absolute best graphics in the series, the graphics that feel the most "Pokémon". I'd bet it's what they probably imagined in their head while doing the originals.

HG/SS do much the same to G/S/C, the only difference being Gen 4's 2.5D probably wasn't a thought in their head so it brings it down a mite (at least in an objective sense moreso in my opinion but I'm purposely not putting that in here).

But it's one that doesn't drag it down from being the pinnacle. It's not enough. You would need game breaking issues for that to be the case.

It sounds like you're giving it a lot more power than it has as well if you think they're doing that even in their own mind.

not really, my experience playing HG is that its a great game. its has many of the things i liked with Platinum, really nice settings and spritework, and some of the best functionality ive ever seen (the UI in particular is beautiful) but the level curve is honest to god shit.

Not me, specially because i skipped gen2 so i have no nostalgia for it, HGSS being one of my favorite games in the series. And with gen1, despite having that "classic" factor, FRLG improves mechanically on it so much that i simply cant force myself to play gen1 just for the sake of childhood memories. I like gen3 aesthetics as well so it doesnt bother me at all to play the remakes when i feel revisiting kanto, having some pokemon be a bit moe viable than gen1 is also a great plus.

Considering how many people complain about the 3D models in the new games, the only Pokemon games that actually have good spritework is gen 2. Although I personally don't mind the remakes, I prefer the graphics and music of the first two gens but the QoL changes that the remakes add generally get me replaying them more often.

As someone who's original game was Red and Blue I can wholeheartedly agree that the graphics are dated. The thing is that older graphics have a charm to them that 3D can never produce. I personally prefer Sprite based graphics and a 8-16 bit soundtrack because there's more of a charm to them and it doesn't seem like they're trying to mimic real life.
I'm aware that my opinion is in the minority and I'm liable to be told I'm looking through nostalgia goggles but that's my honest opinion.

I adore the music in RBY and GSC, 8-bit/chiptune/whatever-it's-actually-called music is basically timeless and still used in things now because it can just sound so good.
