Compared to many other parts and people of life, pets tend to give unconditional love and trust and that creates a bond that many people have as a comfort versus the many other chaotic aspects of life, a love that takes truly extreme circumstances to break. Having something sincerely love you that much, especially in hard times or bringing you out of them, is a powerful feeling and heartbreak over the death as one is as real as that for any human family member you cared on.
