It's a watered down babying version Dragon Quest (which had the original Pokemon mechanics of randomized encountering for monster collecting) and even Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei is a monster collecting RPG that came out like 9 years before the first Pokemon games.
Yo-Kai Watch works WAY more like Shin Megami Tensei than it does Pokemon. Both games have fusions, extremely huge overworld maps you can explore super early, befriendable boss monsters, an actually deep postgame, actually good content and both games are actually challenging and skill-demanding. Idiots that think you can win Yo-Kai battles easily with just auto-attacks get steamrolled by the 3rd boss in YKW2.
