What happened? I know the Pokedex entries are always bullshitty and edgy, but why did they decide to suddenly switch from implying having a mega pokemon made you a great trainer to implying you are heartless for having one?

It was explained in the anime when pokemon and trainer bond the bad side effects go away like when corrina and lucario at first it was crazy but when the bond was better lucario could control it mega power the dex entries only apply to wild mega pokemon

Simple. If you don't train with your megas and have a close bond, the shit side effects outweigh the boost. It's not that uncommon of a trait with temporary power boosts. They even had it in the anime where Korrina's mega lucario going berserk as a basic example. Some megas just have much more hazardous transformations, such as glalie's, that are meant to be overcome with bonds. The game just doesn't apply this due to you being the chosen one and wanting you to get a shiny new mega right off the bat. No friendship required.

I guess that they could've also taken a dump on megas to promote the new gimmick, but also take into account that megas didn't have dex entries prior to gen 7 and still got the whole berserk thing in the anime.

I actually think it's kind of interesting, it gives the impression that Mega Evolution is sugarcoated and overglorified in Kalos and frowned upon in Alola. The idea of certain regions frowning upon another region's trademark gimmick is kind of neat.
