B. It was removed because Pikachu is obtained as early as Viridian Forest, giving you access to it long before any other electric types. It would have rendered the likes of Electabuzz and Electrode useless.

They said it was removed for balancing reasons. That isn't necessarily just stats and how 'OP' it may have been, but it could have been to balance out the number of 1/2/3 stage evolutions available at whatever points in the game.

It's also the biggest pain in the ass to train, and only reaches its final evolution through trading.

Right, I understand that. But I was there for the first Gorochu thread, every one of them (while they weren't badly drawn) looked ugly to me. I just don't like horns and fangs. Especially whenver Pikachu is supposed to clearly be a rodent, the same applies to Raichu. Then suddenly it grows horns for no good reason. I'm just being a pessimist I guess, I'm just assuming that Gorochu would've looked ugly. I really like Raichu's design and would hate to see it tainted by something akin to Rhydon's evolution. GF isn't new to ruining amazing designs with shit evolutions. Even worse if it was the case Raichu would probably have shittier stats or a shittier movepool. I just glad my bromon is the way he is, that's all.

A child's not going to care about that. He'll just use whatever he wants to use. Also, Pikachu's the mascot of the whole series. It would be fitting for its final evolution to be strong no matter how early you can get one. They could easily work around balance issues. Just make Gorochu a stone evolution and give out the stone later on in the game or make it so he evolves much later like at level 50-60.

Raichu WAS pretty decent in gen 1. Certainly far from OP, but with the right stat increases Gorochu could've been a top tier mon in gen 1. And as other people in this thread already stated, that would make the other electric types obsolete, since you can get Pikachu far earlier.

Nah, the red cunt is just the prototype fire starter for gen 2. But the description for Gorochu reminds me a bit of it. Chikorita is the only Johto starter which never changed appearance in development.

Pikachu was also intended to be unbelievably hard to find and wasn't originally intended as the series mascot. The designer of Pikachu even offhandedly mentioned in an interview that they slipped Pikachu into Viridian with an incredibly low encounter rate in hopes of no one finding it, so it would be like a personal Pokemon for themselves (because the designer liked it so much). They also hoped the low encounter rate would make people not want to find it because of how difficult it was to locate, but when the strategy guide came out the low encounter rate had a completely opposite effect and people were catching the shit out of Pikachu which came as a surprise to GF, apparently. The anime probably spurred this on.

Seriously 1 in every 20 Pokemon in Viridian Forest is a Pikachu. If you get from Viridian City to Pewter, getting everything in that godforsaken forest and haven't run into 20 Pokemon in the grass, you either pussed out and took the no-grass route for most of it, or got lucky.

I guess there's also an argument to be made for them not thinking anyone would be able to find it except through word of mouth? The games came out in '96, so the internet wasn't really widely used and even then there likely weren't any huge sites immediately dedicated to discussing the games. They may have thought kids were way less likely to be looking stuff like that up, so the only way they'd ever notice something was wrong was when they couldn't complete their pokedex and had to find that one friend who maybe had that weird rare and obscure mouse they were missing. Remember Pikachu wasn't meant as the original mascot, so maybe knowledge of it was intended to be scarce.

How so? Ho-Oh was one of the first Gold and Silver designs revealed when they announced the games in late 1996. The whole hype for the anime before its premiere was due to Ho-Oh being already known as a new Pokémon that doesn't exist in Red and Green.

Ho-Oh was only mystic to us Western fans, the Japanese already knew what it was when the first episode debuted.

Yeah, but it should really change more proportionally as well. The proportional change between Pikachu and Raichu is already pretty small for an evolution; having a third stage that's even less of a change is just redundant. Making the head smaller, changing the stance from bipedal to quadrupedal, making its body noticeably thinner or rounder rather than the same... any of those would help. (In theory, anyway - I can't really picture what any of those would look like off the top of my head.) But being just a Raichu with some parts exchanged is not enough; this looks like a Raichu redesign or alternate evolution, not a Raichu evolution.
That said, it'd work pretty well as a Mega to be honest. This is much more in line with those in clearly working from the same body base.

They meant ---HAME BALANCE ISSUES---- as in, there weren't enough unique electric pokemon species. Gorochu was probably replaced with Electabuzz, so there wouldn't be just three non-legendary electric pokemon in the game total.

Besides, Pikachu and Raichu are listed among other two stage lines, a distinct portion of the Generation I index list, yes Dragonair most likely didn't evolve into Dragonite at first, explaining their differences.

Electrode really just needed level-up electric moves to be a thing, the thing is available just after the third gym.
Electabuzz is not rendered useless at all since it keeps it's niche of being the only Electric-Type that can get past ground types(using Psychic). Outside that niche, it would get outclassed by Magneton who arrives at the same time.

...you do realize Lapras was in the slow level up group, MASSIVELY underleveled, and Seel and Dewgong are both in-game trades that are immediately available once you can surf, right?
Dewgong in Gen 1 is considered an excellent pickup while Lapras is a massive liability to train up.

Dewgong in gen 1 is one of the few mons that can learn Ice-type moves natural, and with trade exp it levels faster than any other water-type you have.
It's not the best thing around but it is legitimately a really good lategame mon.
