Briefly, I went to the name rater and named my Hoenn starter "FRIEND." After like two battles, I realized how stupid it looked and changed it back.

He still was/is my best friend though.

I didn't like giving nicknames as a kid but when I got Diamond at around 16 I named everyone the animal they were based in, in Spanish, my native language. Chimchar was MONO, Golduck was PATO, etc.
I really enjoyed those names and started calling my pets by their animal names too, something I still do today.
