They could even do remake exclusive new starters and put the originals as Yellow-like side quests (hopefully properly done unlike "get Pikachu kinda happy - Bulbasaur get") to satisfy people who would want new shit and people who would want the old.
And the lore makes it make sense.
Alternate timeline = different Pokémon could exist in this Kanto than in the original one.
Possible sequel = further along in the timeline and thus more new ones (or ones thought extinct) could've been found just like we do in real life all the time.
And if nothing else, there could be Kanto formes of 152+ and at least new legends since US/UM has told us that's not off limits anymore even in the same Gen.
