would you like a game without story?
just you and your pokemon who want to get better, maybe more regions to travel instead. i mean in the games mostly only we and a few npc are involved in the story, the other trainer just wander around without fighting evil teams.
i hate it when i cant go somewhere because the story is blocking my way. why cant i just travel where i want?

So no, I wouldn't play a pokémon game without a story, especially if replacing that story was filling the game with battle halls (smells too much like the CG spin-offs that I never had the misfortune to actually have played) and le ebin "all regions in one1!" meme.

If by story you mean the villain teams and the chosen one schtick then yeah, I wish they never became a thing and fuck everyone who wants to keep that in.

But I'd still want to have a fleshed out rival and other similar recurring characters. Some characterization for the sake of world building and humor is great and they're actually the most memorable parts of the games for me most of the time. If that counts as story then I'd definitely want that kind of story.

My problem has always been the reason why we're doing anything, and the purpose of being the best was never a valid reason for me. I wanted there to be something else to do. I will agree that being a trainer on it's own doesn't need a story, but I would still like there to be an option for some kind of adventure should you want to pursue it, and if you just want to reach the top, then you can do that too, and they won't interfere with each other. I still haven't worked out how in the world to avoid being able to catch everything before even setting foot in a gym, though. Not unless it's like Bullshit Tower and reacts to what pokemon you have.

I don't think no story at all is good, but I would like one where it's more lowkey. So that it's kinda up to the player to piece together how the current events fit and maybe a more lore like focus (think Sinnoh) rather than just a big event suddenly happening 'cause you're the chosen one or whatever. Have most of the information come from talking to npc's or inspecting overworld items and places, and maybe just a few bigger beats of the story towards the end 'cause they have to market those legendaries somehow. I'd also like it if instead of just an evil team, maybe have a couple of factions with different kind of views (not necessarily good or evil, just different) that you can choose to be a part of or maybe even choose none at all and that would then affect small things that happen around the world depending on who you're siding with.
Just make the story less intrusive and tie it more to the exploration so that there's pay off in talking to everyone, checking everything, and actually taking your time thinking about why the locations are the way they are, you know?
