What are your thoughts? Is it worth completing your physical collection of the older games considering that they're available on virtual console?

I think that's really something left to actual collectors at this point. Everyone else uses virtual or emulation for those.

I used to use the pokemon bank to trans my pokemons frome yellow and silver to moon.

i can't seem to find HG/SS available anywhere so i've had to emulate on PC + use R4 cards. both methods have really nifty side effects i wasn't prepared for

It's digital all the way for me. Emulating gives all those wonderful additions of quality of life functionalities, significantly better display, higher resolution, higher framerate, better sound- there's just no comparing it to the original. I can see the appeal of playing on the original consoles, because that in itself could be factored in to the "game experience" despite the flaws. I can see people not liking emulation in some aspects because your Pokémon are locked to the save file, but I just inject a copy of that mon into my SM/XY game after I finish my playthrough of the emulated title.

Absolutely fucking digital. Hell, I own real copies of all of the main series GBC games and yet I'd much rather emulate them on my phone than carry around my GBA. The only reason to use physical copies is if you've got some friends who'd care about it.

The virtual console version lets you catch celebi, and if you are willing to pay $5 +tip you can trade your pokemon up to usum. The original versions can be used on Pokemon Stadium 2.

Because the battery in RGBY only stores save data. In GSC, it has to do that and keep track of the RTC even while turned off.

Save data has been stored in flash memory since RS, which only use the battery for the RTC (same thing with Emerald).

FRLG don't implement a RTC so no battery.

DPPt, HGSS, BW, B2W2, XY, ORAS, SM, and USUM all use the DS or 3DS clock.

Forever as in for as long as the flash memory can sustain read and write operations (which should be many decades), yes. Should it fail, the game will likely warn you (the GBA games definitely do, though the non-Japanese text misleads you into thinking about the battery due to sloppy translations).
