Wasn’t it also stated that this particular kind of evolution happened once before in Kalos? Did they even elaborate on it or is that just another huge point we’re missing?

XYZ was rushed because S/M were right around the corner.

They needed Ash to be able to showcase the new hotness (Megas) but needed a way to get rid of it inconspicuously in case GF decided to do so in the future. Besides wanting to promote megas, they wanted to promote Gen VI Pokemon. Since Diancie was the only Gen VI Mega, they had to half-ass a pseudo-mega for Ash.

This abomination served both purposes:

It shone an additional spotlight on the most popular pokemon of the Gen, while also making it easy to get rid of in a way almost as half-assed as its inception.

The only take away from that interview is that Game Freak designed AshGreninja at the request of the head writer of the show. Everything else is obvious.

perhaps it was a Mega Evolution like mechanic designed for the Kalos starters in "Pokémon Z" that got trashed out when they decided to do sun and moon.. my guess is that all the starters would "mirror" their trainers' appearance and change form

Yajima (head writer of XYZ) wanted the series to focus on the bonds between Ash and Greninja but worried about the Mega Evolution that Game Freak introduced. So he got the game developers themselves to come up with a Buffed form so that it can compete with other Mega Pokemon.

They also didn't want Ash to have a key stone since it conflicts with his bond with Greninja, so they decide to show case the Mega Pokemon in their side story instead (though they came up with said story first).

Calling it a "mega-evolution" is wrong. This is not a mega since it doesn't change too much the pokémon, neither in its behavior. This is what they called "battle-bond" which is a pretty cool concept, but it would have been better if it had stayed in the ashnime, because it's a form related only to Ash, there are not other forms related to the game's MC.
