Should Golem have it's Ground-typing removed? Would it be better as a regular Rock-type?

Design-wise, yes. There's no reason for it being ground other than gamefreak making all non-fossil rock types part ground in gen 1, for whatever reason.

Competitive-wise, not at all. Golem has such pitiful special defense that even without a quadruple weakness it would still die to grass and water, and it would lose some considerable perks like the electric immunity, EQ STAB and taking reduced damage from stealth rocks.

-It’s special defense is nonexistent, unlike Gigalith’s. So taking less damage from Grass and Water wouldn’t mean much

There's no dirt in the Geodude line, only rock/stone. The Ground-typing was merely slapped on because GF didn't want any mono Rock-types in gen I for some reason. Onix and Rhydon don't make sense as dual-types either.

No. One of Golem's best uses is Earthquake, which of course is super effective against electric, poison, rock, fire, etc.

Golem is literally one of the best, most versatile Pokemon to have in your party. Prove me wrong. You can't.
