What the fuck is this shit? Anybody else never get to use any of the online features with these games? Everyone goes on about how these are some of the best games, so I thought I'd check them out, but idk anymore.

The demand was there. Tons of people were still playing Gen 5 games (Particularly because XY were garbage)

The servers hosted not just Pokemon, but every DS and Wii game with online functionality. All of them went down, not just Pokemon's.

The Wii U was two years into its lifespan when Nintendo WiFi went down in 2014, and the 3DS was three years into its lifespan. And the Wii U and 3DS use a completely different service, Nintendo Network.

Keeping servers up for the DS and Wii would have been too much work for too little gain, so when GameSpy was shut down, that was the end

Also the Wii U was a complete and utter failure. Supporting that overpriced paper weight was a bigger waste of money.

And no it still wasn't worth it especially since everyone had moved on from Gen 5 to 6 for online because it was more competitive friendly. Every other big Nintendo WiFi game also had a sequel on either the Wii U or 3DS like Smash for instance that was on both.

Also to your earlier suggestion of Nintendo buying them out, that was impossible because they were bought by Glu Mobile in 2012 two years before it was shut down for good and they began shutting down game servers at random affecting more that Nintendo's own games.

Despite the supposed paperweight eventually becoming successful and earning them a profit. In any case who cares? Gen 5 wasn't even hit particularly hard especially when it comes to BW2.

I get so annoyed whenever i replay these games. Almost every feature is locked behind the dead online functionality.
Especially the C-gear thing, it's just extra baggage that, as far as I remember, has no actual purpose in the game.
