GF didn't need to do it but they did it anyway, and i remember skipping D/P/Pt entirely at the time just for walking pokemon lol.
the feature's not entirely useless anyway. if you wanted to know a mon's friendship level, all you gotta do is talk to them.
just yesterday my vileplume fainted in the bug-catching contest without me catching anything. needless to say, it was pissed a great deal afterwards.
