I don't know the hardware figures by region off the top of my head and I don't really care to search them up, but Japan will always be a sure market for Nintendo where they don't really need to try with the Switch due to the way the console is (portable which is perfect for train commutes and the small space available in general Japanese households, even in docked mode with the charger it's still smaller than a PS4).
If they are going by what was talked about during the financial meetings of "one Switch per household/person" this makes perfect sense:
Genwunners will see red and blue and will scream rushing to buy it. Non Genwunners and kids who didn't play the gen 1, will see and associate to other gens (gen 3 blue/red, gen 4 blue/pink, gen 6 blue/red, gen 7 blue/orange). Some useless biased "evidence": when the gba remakes were released the only Leaf Greens I saw were in the hands of people who had already bought Fire Red.
Japan will just eat up Pokémon one way or another and Nintendo knows it.
