The only reason Vegeta is still alive is not because muh "you will be like him" but because Goku wanted to fight Vegeta for real (it took combined effort of everyone to defeat him), due to his Saiyan pride.

Haven't seen the sub yet but the original movie was noticeably dumber than the TV show aside from the more serious content. It was Power Rangers tier and I always considered Pokemon smarter than Saban's shit writing for MMPR.

Here's something that's always bugged me about people talking about this movie.

"The originals are the real things. They won't lose to the copies if it comes down to a fight in which neither side uses any of their special powers"

This isn't Mew being an asshole and saying clones are shit who deserve to die, this is Mew taking pride in its status as an original to show confidence in its own kind, stating that they can't lose. Mew doesn't want all clones to die, it's just saying that it won't lose. I guess the inclination is for American fans to say "DID YOU KNOW THAT INNOCENT THING WAS ACTUALLY REALLY NOT INNOCENT?" and make shit up to demonize characters.

However, the Dub, 4kids, did fuck up the translation and changed the story of the movie. Looking back on it as a kid, I was confused as to why Mew showed up in the movie and what purpose did IT have to the story.

Maybe not, but it came from a desire to see the Earth (and his son) left in peace. And, go figure, for seven whole years, the Earth is at peace due to this. Coincidence, probably, but this can't really be seen as a selfish act when he did it for the good of mankind and his child.

This isn't even true, he came to Earth to be in the World Martial Arts Tournament, yes, but he didn't do so with the specific intention of fighting Gohan. Plus, seeing as he's dead, one day is all he gets anyway, unless he were to be revived.

Goku wasn't the only one unwilling to do this, but granted, he had a full THREE YEARS to prepare for the Androids and wanted to see how strong he could become. This is kind of selfish, yes, but not sure how this makes him a terrible father or person. They had more than just him, Vegeta and the others were there too. Also, they were right, considering that Android 20 and Gero weren't anything to really worry about. It wasn't until Gero started getting his ass kicked that he activated the actual threats (and even then it seemed like Piccolo and Vegeta/Trunks after getting out of the HTC would have been able to defeat them).

The "fighting is bad" moral feels totally out of place in a franchise built around battling. That added on top of nothing making any sense to critics AND they were just forced to sit through kiddy bullshit with random inexplicable transitions (Pikachu's Vacation) that probably got them in the mood to write it off as stupid kid cash grab trash. I'm not surprised at all that critics thrashed it. Unfortunately, this also spread to the next few films, which were dubbed more faithfully but still got bad reviews because the critics had soured on Pokemon entirely.

Or would your rather see Ash and whatever fruity friends he's currently hanging with wander into a generic city based on a famous real life location the day of/before before a festival dedicated to a legendary Pokemon that saved the town ages ago that hasn't been seen since centuries ago, just as strange events start happening in town as either a troublemaking pokemon or a bad guy trying to catch the aformentiond legendary attempts to capture it and you know the rest like 95% of these movies have THE EXACT SAME FUCKING PLOT only arguably only the first and 20th movies bother to try anything significantly different.

Movie 1 is merely the worst dub 4Kids did in the main Series: it doesn't compare to TPCi's horrendous dubs of Movies 17-20.

The worst dubbed Movie of all time Pokemon wise is a toss up between TPCi's Movie 18 (Hoopa) or Movie 20 (I Choose You).

Why?

- Replacing almost all the Japanese music like Movie 1

- Terrible dub voice acting, unlike Movie 1

- Tons of rewrites to the script, especially in Movie 20's dub

So yeah, TPCi's last few Movie dubs are even more unwatchable than 4Kids' worst Movie dub (this one): consider that.

TPCi is now worse at dubbing the Series than 4Kids was too, however, so that's another shameful thing we have to deal with these days to me.

But the 4Kids dub is superior, so sorry: one bad dub of a Movie hardly changes that they were the ones to improve their Movie dubs with time. Go compare Movie 8's dub to Movie 1's and you'll see they not only kept all the OST for Movie 8, but in addition to that, they actually gave it a good dub script for the most part (even Dogasu admitted it).

TPCi's Movie dubs on the other hand, got progressively worse with time, Movie 20 being the culmination of crap- 1/58 pieces of music kept, tons of rewrites to characters' dialogue (everything TR said is rewritten) and the icing on the crap cake is TPCi have now replaced more Japanese music in the films than 4Kids did (4 films with dub music to 4Kids' first 3 only).
