Because the games have an extremely heavy story focus, yet the writing isn't any good. And Pokémon is not even supposed to be about story, it's supposed to be about exploration. And once again the games lack the longevity that is so important to them.

Kanto has nice dungeons like Seafoam Islands, Pokémon Mansion, Silph co., Cerulean Cave and smaller players like Mt. Moon and Rock Tunnel. Alola has only Vast Poni Canyon which is okay when it comes to the level design, but even then you're constantly interrupted by Lillie and her asinine dialogue.

Assumedly the cutscenes/dialogue.
Personally though, they were my favorites since BW2, although not nearly as good as it.
Great designs, the story was pretty enjoyable (as long as they keep it only to this gen), and the lack of chibis or a grid felt good, vaguely reminded me of the GC titles in a way. Totem battles were great too, and no HM slaves meant the first time I was able to have 6 Pokemon I really wanted rather than 5 with a slave.

Gen 6's presentation values would have been verging on poor on a home console eighteeen years ago.

At least Gen 7's presentation values are only maybe fourteen years out of date.

And I can guarantee you, if Yokai Watch weren't a think, the map design, graphics, and presentation in Gen 7 would have been no better than Gen 6.

And mind you I regard the entire series as a stagnant mess in general, I just draw positives were I can find them.

That's because that formula was made back on the fucking gameboy. It worked fine then for invoking that feeling.

Problem is, instead of adapting with upgrades in technology to echo the core concept of Pokemon, talentless hacks who were only involved in side elements of Pokemon took over and just milked that same formula until it was bone dry.

Pokemon COULD be a game about adventuring and exploring with cool and strange creatures. Instead it's a story about your best friend and their whacky adventures through a hallway painted with tropical colors.
