I do however think people are overreacting about the whole GO integration.
The way that I see it GO will just be like the pokewalker except with all of GO's features and more, completely optional.
In handheld mode the touch screen could be used to throw the pokeball like in GO and same with using the joycons docked with motion controls but I don't see them replacing the battle mechanics at all so once you're ready to catch the pokemon there's a button to press to go into catch mode and then that's what would be like GO

Considering it's going to be retreading Yellow's ground, Legendaries will have nonexistent involvement in the game's story unless GameFreak themselves forgot that Mewtwo has nothing to do with Team Rocket in the games thanks to Rainbow Rocket having no choice but to give Giovanni one since there's no other Legendaries suitable.
And since Pikachu/Eevee is the Box Mascot, it's likely the game will put huge emphasis on their bond with the player throughout, ultimately culminating into some big climatic moment wherein Pikachu does a thing/Eevee evolves into the obligatory new Eeveelution.

I guarantee you that any Go-related features will be completely optional and will not interfere with the game's main gameplay. What you're doing is like getting upset that HGSS had Pokethlon or that USUM had the Photo Club. I promise it will be a feature you can completely ignore if you don't like it.

I'm more interested in HOW it would work if it's real.
Will it be a full on reboot of the series or will it be in the same current timeline?
Will there be NEW pokemon or will they just re-introduce much of the more interesting and iconic gen 2-7 mons and "kanto forms" and have a massively reduced pool of pokemon that can be in this one?
Is the following only for Pikachu and Eeevee like it was in Pokemon Yellow or will they allow all smaller Pokemon to hang around outside their balls?
Any changes to the battle system or are the old rumors about that now looking less likely?

The only way they can justify these games for me is if they redo and expand the routes a hell of lot. A number of Kanto routes suffer from this unnatural maze-like feel that makes them stick out, as though they belonged in an even older RPG.
How about two separate game modes: "Original 151" for those who want the original Pokemon distribution in Kanto, and a modern mode with an assortment of changes?

I'm not mad about going back to Kanto or about the never ending gen1 pandering.
What makes me livid is that all the things that they created till now are wasted potential.
Mega evolutions, Z moves... All things that could benefit many Pokémon and got ignored.
Fucking hell, instead of giving normal evolutions to gen 4, 5 and 6 Pokémon they keep focusing on gen 1 ones.
There are so many recent monsters that would deserve an evo/mega evo/z move but they keep getting ignored for the sake of focusing on the first 150 ones.

Kanto is great but they need to make it a lot bigger this time around. I don't expect Breath of the Wild proportions but it's pretty much the only way to not make the finding wild pokemon thing get boring fast.

I think the real issue is just how creatively bankrupt it feels. If there are mechanics from GO then it will be really hard for me to see the game as anything but a mindless cash grab with the majority of the budget spent on marketing.

I understand that making new pokemon that fit in with the old ones is pretty difficult. Theres only so many things GF can do. But they've been at it for years, if they decide to completely turn away from focusing on new gens (or at the least preserving the original game mechanics) then it is evidence that I should drop the series altogether before it completely stagnates.

Why they decided to so quickly drop Mega Evolutions I'll never understand. In-universe they make so much more sense than Z-moves. And neglecting to provide evolutions or forms for other gens was just a punch in the gut.

1. They overhaul Kanto, making it at least 4 times as big and expand the dex far beyond 150.

2. The games are so atrociously lackluster that they are critically panned by fans. Game Freak is finally encouraged to get their act together.

Worst Timeline: The games are horrible, yet still praised by nostalgiashits, Game Freak apologists, and nintendrones.

Look, I love kanto. I started there with yellow. I'm just not wanting a shit game. I don't want some GO based thing, I want a pure main series pokemon game. I understand we've put up with a ton of kanto based remarks and references in the past. Let's get kanto out of the way, maybe even make it better, and move on to the next region and the next 100 or so new mons. GF needs to give us the remake that kanto deserves. If they need more places to catch mons, add the orange archipelago or more to the sevii isles.

It won't be the roots, and it will look very disappointing and similar to the new cartoony aesthetic of SM. I would only be slightly happy if we go back to the water painting and squareish designs for this game.
If it's just a shitty 3D kanto with new anime-like/idol stuff and new boring facilities which breaks the aesthetic of the region, like they did with ORAS, this game might be the first main game i'm not buying.

I'm not at all concerned with what the region is.

I'd prefer a new one because I like to learn all the new shit but that's honestly superfluous now since they're no longer limiting themselves to new Gen = new species and new species are far more important.

That said, what I AM concerned with is the content.

If they don't bring back all of the content from the past, or at least a fair amount of it with stated plans to bring it all back over the next couple games, I'm not interested.

Yes, that's why it's still on a handheld system.

Main series is handheld only and will always be because Game Freak doesn't develop them for anything else. Refuses to, that's why the Switch is what it is.
