Wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the 'mouth' part of the design or not. Decided to go for it, but it did come out a bit odd.

Basically this. I'll give them an A for effort but, removing all the features from a Pokemon to the point where it feels empty and lifeless is awful, that's not realistic at all. How would an actually well designed Kanto form even look like? What aspect of the region would make them a Pokemon from another region alter? That's what people need to ask themselves before making these designs.

The image you posted was fully intended to make both Pokémon look worse than they do in canon. It's a commentary on how trying to force an existing Pokémon into the style of another Generation is a bad thing and every Pokémon is at its best in the Generation for which it was actually made. This is literally the worst example to use if you're proposing that Gen I-style redesigns are desirable. I'm not even saying they can't work - I'm sure they could if they weren't designed with that purpose in mind - but the designs in your image are not only terrible, but intentionally so, with the intent of stopping things like this post you're using them for.

Glad someone else said. But take it even further, look at this bland two color mother fucker. All those extra segmentations, texture gradients and iridescence.
