It's fuel for your moves, but aside from making a couple of moves very risky, a few others more viable for stall, and making you have to occasionally be careful in dungeons, it's a mechanic that could easily be scrapped for some other kind of energy supply system that's related to something you have to keep track of as you travel, and can use items to enhance. Pokemon also has hundreds of shitty moves that don't see competitive use, along with hundreds of Pokemon that aren't even fun to use in-game due to being far too much like other Pokemon. I think Pokemon needs to try and be a little bit more like some kind of TCG where the moves and the monsters and the items all hold some kind of relevant value in possibilities for gameplay and for competition. I think we are in for a purge of lots of moves and abilities, and in return we will get more stuff that's actually worth using, and possibly less stuff that makes pokemon stale once the metagame of a sub-generation is set in stone.
My prediction is that in nu Pokemon, there will be a lot of stuff that gets missed from old gens, but hopefully, it creates an experience that feels less like an expansion pack and more like a cohesive use of the IP they've hoarded for 23 years.
