They can't even like Gen 1 without liking chunks of Gen 2 to begin with because Ho-Oh was literally in the first episode, the first two featured Gen 2 Pokemon to varying degrees, Togepi was planted into the crew early on to promote the idea of a new game coming around and Tracey had a Marill.

Unfortunately, I'm sad to say that I agree. I could also have accepted if the series ended after Gen 4, because that also seemed like a good stopping point. Although I do think each generation after 4 had something good to add, on the whole, things have gotten worse with every game after that, I think.
