In DPPt there were those dumb route transition stations already. Hell, that was between Celadon and Saffron in Gen 1. It's been with Pokemon since the beginning.
What really broke the world feel of Pokemon was the new lunatic climate and routes. In Kalos you can transition from a town covered in ice and blizzard to stormy damp marshlands, or a field full of autumn leaves then back into raging blizzard again. It's like Gen 5's season system gone horribly wrong.
