They'll do the same thing as HGSS: Random NPCs railroading you while calling you the chosen one and waxing empty words about bonds, time and space. Also, you can forget about skipping Seafoam Islands or choosing which way to go to Fuchsia, because random NPCs will block the paths.

No it's not. Just because S/M fucked up with ultra-linearity and cutscenes every 5 meters doesn't mean that Pokémon wouldn't benefit from better story-telling. Gen 5 did a good job.

A well written story would still be a bad thing for the game. Narrative has no place here. Only optional/hidden lore and sidequest stories.

Haven't played USUM.
Though thinking about it again, I actually enjoyed the Looker quest in XY with the Power Ranger girl. If Pokémon games had more quests like these sprinkled on the campaign, then I wouldn't mind a lack of big story.

But yeah most of them are "show me X", in pokemon it would be better if they tell you "show me shiny pokemon" or "bring me X from new place in the map".

Fetch quests can be bareable when they don't force you to grind or waste resources.
