If they still have some indie studio tier staffing, that's their own fucking fault. They have access to develop one of the most successful media property of all time, unless nintendo takes 98% of the profit, then gamefreak is just cheaping out.

Even an indie studio should be able to make more than mantine surf in a year. And even disregarding that they could have easily just pushed USUM back if even a few months

Actually no, the reaction was universally mixed from the start by both /vp/ and normies.
Of course it only got worse from there, I at least expected them to fix blatant garbage like the teleporting volcano and other unfinished areas, but nope.

...That being said, a lot of those things really would have made the games a lot better. USUM had a lot of interesting ideas that just weren't explored to their full potential, especially Ultra Space. At the very least, they should have just been one game. "Pokemon: Eclipse Version", or something like that. That way it could have at least lived up to Platinum or Emerald, with their handful of additions and story changes. But instead, it was two games like B2W2, which had a lot more content than their predecessors and did a better job justifying having two versions.

Why couldn't it have been a fully revamped, alternate universe version of SM? More Alola forms, different trials, a bigger story, characters in new roles... that's what I thought of when I first saw the trailer. But instead, it's the same game as before with a handful of differences, and there's two of them for no good reason.

I'm a filthy casual, I don't even ask for much. I was hoping for something like the Battle Chateau or Big Stadium so I wouldn't have to make due with Poni Plains for my postgame level grinding needs. USUM didn't even have that. Can you even rematch trainers in these games?

I only followed SM through the hype season.
I wanted to avoid spoilers, and play the game (relatively) blind.
Then USUM was announced and I was excited that I could just start with a better version, instead.
So, I was personally optimistic about it.
Still didn't ever play USUM, though.
