Anyone use Pokemon to help learn Japanese? Playing through physical Platinum right now in JP and it's comfy as fuck.

No, but I know a shit ton of people who learned basic English through Pokémon. Mexicans, Vietnamese, Chinese, and more. Just my experience though.

I got Black in japanese when it first came out and i learned Katakana just by memorizing the japanese names and using my brain, fun times.

Several years ago when I was a nip student I played Sapphire and it was pretty easy to understand, good times.

I don't use guides, I have to look up around 30 words/hour in a dictionary though
But I lived in Japan for a year as an exchange student so it's not hard to understand

I've played through Green and Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team (main story) in Japanese several years ago.
Green was great with all the fucked sprites and Mystery Dungeon shredded my heart like it used to in the good ol' days. Despite having had to look up tons of words (ended up with ~600 for Green and ~500 for PMD) it was a lot of fun, and playing them almost daily and dealing with their unknown/difficult words and grammar helped with the language a lot actually. Boosted my motivation to study, too. Would recommend.

Just remember that learning a language through games is fine but there is a big flaw some people miss.
Say you want to study for an hour and decide to play said game in Japanese for an hour. How much of that hour did you actually spend reading instead of playing the game? There are a lot of points in different games where there are no dialogue which means you aren't actually studying for a full hour.
However if you are playing a game for a long long time or aren't counting that time you play a game towards how many hours you usually read in a day and just use it as a bonus then its fine.
Would reccomend XY, ORAS or US/UM because they have kanji. Do the spinoffs have kanji?
