Super Mystery Dungeon is far and away the best in the series. It beats out Explorers by a mile just by virtue of its vastly improved gameplay and stellar soundtrack.

Seriously, I cannot overstate how good the soundtrack is, especially all the dungeons. I've played a lot of video games and Super's in my top 3 OSTs. If its songs were in a Final Fantasy game instead or something more well known the OST would have gone down in history as one of the GOATs.

I actually found Super Mystery Dungeon to be the most disappointing in the series. It's not terrible, but I really hate how they handled the recruitment system.

Dialogue is terrible.
Forced surprise element to the story, it's extremely repetitive.
Actually gets challenging near the end, relying more on item management.

Story is meh, game gets progressively challenging and fun.

Anyone else think this series needs a reboot? I think they need to drop the whole "human who's brough to the pokemon world" and take a different approach, at least story wise.

Gameplay tho, I it let you move around dungeons like in the hub to center it more around exploration, and when you encounter an enemy it changes to the grid system.

Missions involving events could be fun too. "Escape the dungeon/floor in X turns before it collapses" or something like that.

that's literally GTI, weird that super dropped that, then again super dropped almost everything from GTI.

Yep. The OST and gameplay are stellar.
It has its flaws, though. The story is basically made of two halves with little connection between them, and the characters suffer as a result because neither set gets the build-up or development they deserve. Plus the post-game mostly isn't there.

The school was the most engaging part of the story and the game would have benefited from sticking with the smaller scale and focusing on developing the kids more
