so what made the battle frontiers so good?
or alternatively, how did the battle frontiers make the games in which they were included good?

In terms of what made the frontier fun: the each of the buildings gave a unique challenge not present in the rest of the game with good difficulty that was mostly based on game and mechanic knowledge, not just breeding and IVs/EVs, but forced you to draft good team comps ect not just strong gimmicks like the maison does. In terms of the games themselves, gen 3 had great cohesiveness as a whole and it was the first time the whole "legendary fucks shit up" story was used so it wasnt the tired shit that it is today, also the actual frontier area gave you access to some cool pokes not available elsewhere. Gen 4 wasnt as good as gen 3 imo but the frontier area was better as a whole with the italian countryside vibes and the villa where you could dump all of the extra money you had on a larger goal.

Old bait, PWT is a renamed and more limited Battle Frontiers with a bunch of NPC that got their sprites swapped with gym leader ones, same for the Battle Subway that was just a bland Battle Frontier / Tower mode where the MC had extra work by walking from a cabin to another unlike the prefered standard mode.
Also less battles per tour and less points, but I guess it can be a positive aspect since you can go from a tour mode to another after only 3 battles.

Innovative competitive battling. With frontier brains and symbols filling the roles of gym leaders and badges. It felt like the next step but it was optional where you really had nothing to lose if you weren't interested.

I'll be all transparent here
I actually don't even play half the facilities, but the ones i would play, i really really loved. And also i'm a fan of all the move tutors, item shops and shit like that.

I dont think that the BF made any of the games that they were in good by itself, but the games that included a BF were already good and the inclusion of a BF made the games that much better, both because the games were good and had a good aesthetic/vibe and core and because gamefreak didnt half-ass a shitty version of the BF into an okay game (I.E. battle maison). I think that a modern BF would only disappoint judging by gamefreaks recent track record. Theres a lot that went into balancing the different buildings and restrictions and just slapping the old templates onto games that have added around 500 pokemon would not go well, you could even tell that they considered this when making the gen 4 BF as they switched the buildings up to better suit the new region. Really i'd rather have no BF in the new games over a BF and a shitty cutscene filled 20 hour tutorial core game.

They're not without their flaws though. ORAS COULD HAVE vastly improved them by:

>set teams focused on particular strategies (though there can still be more random facilities)
>team preview

Orre Colosseum and Master Colosseum are still the most fun post-game facilities in the series. They feel like challenges to be overcome, rather than rolling dice.

The Emerald Frontier was nice because they tried to make it include everything that goes into pokemon battling. You've got the usual stuff like knowing pokemon and type advantages, but also weirder things like an entire facility based on luck, and another that's literally all about exploring dungeons.

I think that's another thing that made the Frontier great. Even if not everyone wanted to do all of it, it often had something for everyone.

nobody ever said to implement battle revolution as the post game. The conceptual thought that is seen around on the internet, is to implement PBR's poketopia as the hub-lcation or be the inspiration for it, not "we put PBR in ur game now instead, sry"

desu it goes without saying that they obviously need to work on it if it was in the game, because first of all you can't walk around there
You can't enter a building without selecting it from a menu, you can't interact with people, there are no stalls to purchase reward items.

But bish i'd definitely be up for just hanging out in a stadium on the side to watch people battle and shit.
