Around ten years ago, some GameFAQS user named Yoh_of_Izumo posted a scathing review of Pokemon Diamond that got a helpful mark

Pokemon is more than a series of games, it's an idea. An idea that was explored in anime, manga, trading cards, books, plays and more.

Pokemon as an idea can do so much more through games, just as Mario can carry SMB 3 and Sunshine in the same series, Pokemon should have evolved into new styles of gameplay.

Pokemon died as a phenomenon around Gen 3 because it kept doing the same shit. Kids at the time were sold on the idea more than the games, and they wanted to feel more and more like they were playing the anime or living their own dreams in the Pokeworld.

The anime died around that time because who the hell would want to self insert as a habitual loser who abandoned his mons at the sight of a new region.

Are you dumb? Pokémon has explored many different types of games. Mystery Dungeon, Pinball, TCG, Conquest, Colosseum/XD, Detective Pikachu, Go, Shuffle, etc.

They're not gonna stop making mainline games because they sell the best. Also, Mario hasn't evolved much more than Pokémon, relatively speaking. Excluding the shift from 2D to 3D, there isn't that much fundamentally different between 64, Sunshine, Galaxy and Odyssey.

All in all it comes to the philosophy that the imagination heavy gameplay and style of the mainline games, which were born from the limited hardware of the 90's are acceptable representations of what Pokemon is today.

They try to remedy this by cutscenes and a more involved story, but that further bogs down the sense of your own Pokemon adventure in the world.

My point was that you use Mario as an example of gameplay that's 'evolved' but the fact is that Pokémon has evolved just as much (or as little).

The difference is that all Mario games could be considered 'AAA', but Pokémon has never been more than a standard, subpar JRPG that happened to have an interesting monster catching gimmick and popular monsters. People complain that Pokémon is now somehow worse than it used to be, but it was never actually that good.

I dunno, I think he might have had a point. We are at like 800 Pokemon right now, and so many of them are forgettable shitmons. Even the ones that do gain their fans only have a short time in the spotlight, before they are shoved aside in favor of the next batch.

Imagine if we were only at about 300 pokemon right now, but each one had more of a chance to make a meaningful impact on the meta, the merchandising, and the movies/anime. I'd prefer that to be honest. In an ideal world, each gen would have only introduced 30 Pokemon max, with each one bringing something legitmately new to the table.
