The raw definition is you are simply assuming a role. I agree you cannot have a role without a story, because then what is the point of the role? You can't do anything.

It doesn't matter if you or the game is making it, you still need a story. The question was simply about a story, it didn't mention where the story was coming from.

You know what I mean. The prominence of the narrative in the first two generations was so minimal that it might as well not have been there. Saying that they have no story is exaggerating a bit, but it gets the point across and isn't meant to be taken literally.

I want pokemon lore/story something that you have to go out of your way to find.
Not shoved in your face every 10 seconds.
So that it looks super simple for the lowest common denominator but those who go out of their way to look between the lines find a more complex story
