Before the industrial revolution it wouldn't be uncommon for men to raise children too or for women to do their share of hard labor for their community.

Here's another fun fact: humans are naturally Biphasic, as in they have two sleep cycles. Sleeping in one cycle eight hours a day is actually really fucking unnatural for us. Experiments and studies show that human beings will naturally drift towards a two-cycle sleep pattern when removed from society's demands.
