Those on the left are ugly and cranked the legendary powercreep up to ridiculous levels. Kyogre and Groudon were already cutting it really close.
The UBs are weird and not everyone likes their designs, but they're fine in terms of how they fit into the games.

Ultra beasts in an instant.
They don’t look like Pokémon, and the whole alternate dimension thing is just sci-fi deus ex machina.
The creation trio at least provide a mystical and cosmic origin story to the Pokémon world and give sinnoh a feel that’s entirely it’s own. Plus Giratina-O is awesome in its own right.

I hate gen 4 and think most of the designs are lame but Giratina is decent and the rest grew on me a bit. You don't have to like UBs because they are purposely designed to be unlike any other pokemon. Personally I think the designs are very strong and the concept is very interesting.

Exactly this. The so called "creation trio" are literally the lore equivalent of Power Creep.
Back in gens 1/2, legends were just "really strong, rare Pokémon"- in gen 3, we got legends who could apparently control the whole fucking planet. Finally in G4 you had these literal GODS you apparently created the fucking UNIVERSE. How the fuck are you supposed to one-up that?
It just looks fucking stupid having very strong, but otherwise unremarkable Pokémon (think lugia, kyurem, lunala, solgaleo) be on an equal level to literal Pokémon God and Pokémon Satan.
It also doesn't make sense when you consider that these so-called "gods" can be captured against their will by a TWELVE YEAR OLD CHILD.

Gee, it's almost as if the Ultra Beasts were an afterthought.
It took Gamefreak an entire rehashed game to give them any depth, and even then it was just giving them their own "homeworlds" to justify that they didn't just come from bumb-fucking-nowhere.

Creation Trio. Ultra beasts, I enjoy the Creation trio (quartlet?), they all have really interesting designs. the Ultra beasts have some cool designs too, but what gives the gen 4 pokemon the upperhand is not all the ultra beasts look cool (looking specifically at celesteela and the blacephalon)

And I really enjoyed gen 4 + jewel of life

But blacephalon just doesn't make any sense. Some kind of firework dandelion? Then why is it a ghost type? If it was fire/grass and knew seed bomb that'd make sense, instead we get this carnival ride ghost that can explode. We get no clues, the design is amazing, but it just doesn't make sense as a pokemon, more like a caricature of a different pokemon.

Celesteela is a plant that blasts off into space, it's supposed to be a combination of a bamboo shoot, a rocket/satellite, and princess Kaguya (i.e. a traditional robed woman).
Blacephalon is supposed to be a clown combined with a tall firework in the middle of bursting open, and apparently moves like a snake.
The head is the firework blast and the collar frill is the part of the firework beginning to burst open. The body is the tube of the firework, and the limbs and rest of it are the "clown" parts, with the frill also being worked into that.

TLDR it's a firework in the middle of exploding combined with a clown.

It's known as the Fireworks Pokemon so that's it's whole gimmick. In Japanese it's name translates to something like head goes boom. I'd imagine it's a ghost type because of the fact it throws its head and detonates it like a firework. Plus, I don't think UBs are really have to make complete sense as pokemon which is why they are so great. They are aliens after all.

The UBs look pretty good, the others look silly. Giratina's alright, but in the end it's 11 really good designs vs an event-only pokemon and some dragons with spikes and plates stuck on in weird places. By virtue of Arceus being event-only I'd discard it instantly, the other parts are just a bonus.

Do people ever elaborate on why the Creation Trio or the Ultra Beasts have shit designs, or is it mostly just "I don't like it" in various forms? I always see "these are shit because gods" or these are shit because I say they don't look like Pokemon" which don't really mean anything design wise.

Aesthetically, I prefer the Gen IV Legends because they look like ancient decorated monsters. To me, the UBs just look too synthetic (Living Oragami, Bamboo rockets, A giant face with legs and arms and another face on top). I get that they're supposed to be extradimensional and completely different, but I don't see the appeal.
Beyond that though, I think the lore for the God Squad was much more fleshed out and well thought through in their premiere games than the UBs. The UBs were half assed in their game (then again, most things were), and the way they expanded on them in USUM was pretty much a glorified way to throw more legendaries at the player for nothing.
Plus, the UBs don't do much in terms of cultural impact in their world. They have such little effect on the story beyond being a plot device and they have no cultural ties to their region's history. Ultra beasts were a cool idea but done poorly.

Arceus and the creation trio were a great idea but done poorly.

Since the creation trio have been powercreeped i feel they need a retcon.
Arceus needs to have the highest BST with the exception of maybe mega legendary pokemon.

Giritina needs to be able to transform without holding an item.
The hold items for each member of the trio act as a megastone thing so we can finally get primal dialga.

Acknowledge arceus in universe but make sure its never catchable. Need to keep that God like status.

UB while goofy can at least be expanded on in future games with science and shit and pokemon that are time/space jumpers make sense considering we have had celebi around for 20 years now.

TLDR: Retcon creation trio and arceus to match thier in universe power and expand on them lorewise.
Fix UB in future titles by just explaining them better then US/UM did add like a pair of new ones each gen.

Honestly how do you impress anyone with legendaries in Pokemon after you make the Pokemon Gods and rulers of time and space? Had they not been created I probably would have appreciated the legendaries that came after them much more. They should have been saved for the last gen.

As for UBs I feel completely indifferent to them.

As much as people give the UBs shit for being catchable, I think that hurt the CT much more. Most of the UBs also work in their real world basis much better than the CT, particularly Pheromosa. The UBs weren't the mascot trio though (which always get more legends and working into the region) or even officially recognized by external Pokemon media as sublegends, so I don't think this is really a fair comparison on the first place for the thread.
