Eh I wasn't that bothered. Ash is the king of neglecting type match-ups and still winning and this time it got flipped on him.

He still made it to the finals, making it his best League performance so far. Also consider that while we have been following Ash for 20 years, in-universe he's still very much in the gifted "gifted youth" category. It's actually amazing he's as good as he is.

Besides after Tobias I came to accept that it's Ash's fate to always get stonewalled by something he didn't see coming in the league. I am however curious how the anime would handle him actually getting to challenge the E4/Champion. Would people STILL be mad if he won the league but then went down to the first E4 member?

No, people would enjoy Ash wining the Pokemon League and we can finally see how the anime does the Elite 4 and the Champion challenge. It would have been better in Kalos so we could see him get BTFO by an Elite 4 member and we could see him retrain his Pokemon in Alola and become it's first Champion.
